Affordable does not mean you need to skimp on the features. That is what Microsoft thinks anyway. The newly announced Lumia 640 and 640XL is the company’s testament to that. With great looking design and capabilities that are usually featured in phones twice the price, what’s not to like?

The two models share the same chipset – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 running at 1.2 GHz, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board storage. Microsoft knows that isn’t enough for the mobile media binging culture we are in – so they also slapped on a microSD card slot that supports up to 128GBs! How’s that for mobile entertainment space.

The big differentiator for the two phones are the screens and camera modules. The Lumia 640 comes with a 5 inch HD display, while the 640 XL features a larger 5.7 inch display, but unfortunately sharing the same 720p display as the 640. The former will have a 2500mAh battery while the latter will have a 3000mAh battery – enough for a whole day out.

On the camera from, the 640 sports an 8 megapixel module on the back, while the 640 XL is a little bit more up market, with its 13 megapixel sensor as well as Carl Zeiss lens for higher image quality on the go.

While the devices will be sold with Windows 8.1 out of the box, Microsoft did mention that they will be bringing the Windows 10 update to the new phones as and when it is available. They also mentioned that all current Lumia phones with Windows 8.1 installed will enjoy the Windows 10 update, with caveats for features on certain models due to limitations of hardware.

“Our newest Lumia devices build on our momentum in the affordable smartphones space,” said Jo Harlow, corporate vice president for Phones at Microsoft. “With the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL, we continue to make innovation accessible to more people. We have packaged competitive hardware with innovative Windows software and Microsoft services to help you achieve more, wherever and whenever you want.”

The Lumia 640 and 640 XL will be rolled out globally in April and March respectively, with attractive pricing for both. The Lumia 640 is expected to retail from 139 Euros (~RM557), while the Lumia 640 XL will have a sticker price of 189 euros (~RM769). As a special treat for customers, with every purchase of either a Lumia 640 or Lumia 640 XL from April until June, each customer will receive a one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal, which includes the latest Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote) on the Lumia as well as on one PC or Mac and one tablet, plus 1TB of OneDrive storage, and 60 free minutes of Skype Unlimited Worldwide calling per month.
